By the community of Ajuterique in La Esperanza, a sparsely populated area with volcanic soil there is a forest of 500 dwarf trees, no higher than 21in similar to Japanese bonsai.
There is still no scientific explanation as to why these trees did not grow taller, but it has been demonstrated that they are around 100 years old.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (SERNA) through its Biodiversity department is putting together a team to characterize the dwarf forest and to grant it the status of Natural Reserve. A program is being devised that would allow for protected ecotourism involving the area’s organizations.
